Playmates Pulls No Punches with “Real Reptilian Heroes”
by Mike Stencel

Though playtime may be coming to an end for our heroes in a half shell, Playmates Toys is planning one final shell-shocking celebration for the World of TMNT, packed with retro-inspired figures, outrageous vehicles, and crossover mashups that feel tailor-made for longtime collectors who grew up during the golden age of Saturday morning cartoons and toy aisles.
With the company set to lose its master toy license for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles at the end of the year, Playmates appears determined to send the brand out in style. Over the past several decades, the turtles have crossed paths with countless iconic franchises including Ghostbusters, Cobra Kai, WWE, Stranger Things, Star Trek, and Masters of the Universe. However, none may feel more natural than the latest collaboration between the turtles and G.I. Joe. For collectors who grew up with both franchises, Playmates’ “Real Reptilian Heroes” line may very well be the company’s most ambitious TMNT crossover yet and perhaps the perfect farewell before the turtles march into a brand-new era.
TMNT x G.I. Joe
The upcoming TMNT x G.I. Joe line is the kind of crossover many ’80s kids probably imagined while smashing action figures together across their bedroom floors decades ago. In a joint collaboration between Playmates and Hasbro, the new line combines the military-styled realism of G.I. Joe with the pizza-fueled chaos of the TMNT universe.

The figure assortment features an impressive blend of both obvious and surprisingly clever character pairings. Leonardo steps into the role of Snake Eyes, Raphael becomes Roadblock, Donatello transforms into communications expert Dial-Tone, and Michelangelo perfectly embraces the laid-back attitude of Shipwreck. Joining the team is April O’Neil as Scarlett, complete with her own A.W.E. Shell-Striker vehicle inspired by the classic vintage AWE Striker.

Playmates also revealed the Turtle-Fly Copter, a hilarious yet awesome reimagining of the classic Dragonfly assault helicopter. The vehicle sports turtle-shell textures, missile-firing action features, and even includes Wild Bill’s signature cowboy hat accessory. It somehow manages to feel both completely ridiculous and absolutely perfect at the same time, which is exactly what fans want from a TMNT crossover.

Of course, every great hero lineup needs villains, and Playmates didn’t disappoint. Shredder takes command as Cobra Commander, Krang fills the role of Destro, Slash channels Storm Shadow, while Bebop and Rocksteady become Dreadnoks Ripper and Buzzer. Each figure will feature multiple accessories, weapons, and retro-style card packaging that feels heavily inspired by the original toy lines from the late ’80s and early ’90s.

While Playmates hinted this could potentially be a single-wave release, collectors are already dreaming about future additions. A Blind Master-inspired Splinter feels almost mandatory, while a Casey Jones version of Beach Head would fit seamlessly into the line.

Beyond the impressive sculpt work and nostalgic packaging, what makes the TMNT x G.I. Joe line stand out is how naturally the two properties complement one another. Both franchises exploded in popularity during the same era, both built passionate collector fanbases, and both thrived on colorful heroes, outrageous villains, and unforgettable vehicles.

For longtime turtle fans, this line feels less like a gimmick and more like a celebration of nearly four decades of toy history. It’s Playmates embracing the fun, creativity, and absurdity that made the TMNT brand such a cultural phenomenon in the first place.

The TMNT x G.I. Joe assortment, including the 4.5–5.25-inch figures, Turtle-Fly Copter, and A.W.E. Shell-Striker, is expected to begin pre-orders over Memorial Day weekend at retailers including Target, Walmart, Amazon, and Entertainment Earth.
